How to Power Broom Artificial Turf

Power brooming is one of the most important maintenance steps for artificial turf and one of the most commonly skipped. A power broom uses rotating bristles to lift flattened turf fibers back to their upright position, redistribute infill material, and dislodge debris trapped at the base of the fibers.

If your turf looks matted, flat, or worn in high-traffic areas, power brooming is likely the first thing it needs.

What a Power Broom Does

A turf power broom is a walk-behind machine with a rotating cylindrical brush at the base. The brush spins against the direction of the turf fibers, lifting them upright. As the fibers lift, debris that has settled at the base becomes exposed and can be extracted. The brushing action also loosens compacted infill and redistributes it evenly across the surface.

The result is turf that looks fuller, drains better, and feels softer underfoot. Matted areas in front of doors, along walkways, and in pet runs are the most visible improvement.

When to Power Broom

In Las Vegas, turf should be power broomed at least twice per year. The ideal timing is early spring before the heat season and early fall after summer use. High-traffic areas like pet runs, play areas, and paths may need brooming quarterly.

Signs that your turf needs power brooming include fibers that lean in one direction and do not spring back when touched, visible infill on the surface from compaction pushing it upward, areas where the turf feels harder or thinner underfoot, and drainage that takes noticeably longer after rain or rinsing.

Can You Power Broom Yourself

Consumer-grade power brooms are available for purchase or rental, typically ranging from $200 to $500 for purchase or $50 to $100 per day for rental. They work for light maintenance on small areas.

However, there are important considerations for DIY power brooming. Using the wrong brush type or speed can damage turf fibers. Stiff metal bristles or excessive speed can fray the fiber tips, causing permanent damage that makes the turf look worn and reduces its lifespan. Always use a power broom with synthetic or nylon bristles rated for artificial turf.

Brush direction matters. Power broom against the grain of the turf fibers, not with them. Brushing with the grain pushes fibers further down instead of lifting them.

Avoid power brooming in the middle of a hot Las Vegas day when surface temperatures exceed 140 degrees. Heat softens turf fibers, making them more susceptible to damage from mechanical brushing. Broom in the early morning or evening when the surface has cooled.

Power Brooming as Part of Professional Cleaning

Professional turf cleaning services include power brooming as a standard step in the cleaning process. The brooming happens first, before any chemical treatment, because lifting the fibers and exposing the infill allows the enzyme treatment to penetrate deeper and work more effectively.

Commercial power brooms used by professional services are more powerful and more precisely adjustable than consumer models. They are calibrated for the specific turf type and fiber density to maximize lift without risking fiber damage.

If you are considering professional turf cleaning, the power brooming step is one of the key differences between a professional service and a DIY rinse. It is the mechanical action that makes the chemical treatment effective.
